Launched at EICMA, 2016, Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 was globally unveiled and also launched for the Indian market. It won’t be wrong to say, you get an option among the two viz. Aprilia Shiver and Dorsoduro, if you don’t like the looks of either of them because technically these two are identical. The Dorsoduro 900 focuses on adventurer biking with an introductory price tag of 12.5 lakh rupees (ex-showroom, Pune). Brought into India as CBU imports, they are available through Motoplex dealerships located in Kochi, Bangalore, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad. The Dorsoduro 900 will compete with Ducati Hypermotard 939. However, the Dorsoduro, in the form of the 1200, is already available in India and now the 900 joins the club.

Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 Looks

The Dorsoduro gives a display of adventure-paramount character. It offers a high ground clearance with a grazing front fascia, artful headlamp, and tall visor. The fuel tank looks brawny with the side panels and graphics of Aprilia. The seat has been redesigned for the betterment of riding over any practically feasible terrains. The Dorsoduro features all new side covers on the fuel tank, the all edgy and elevated front mudguards, side panels, and redesigned tail fearing. On the front, the headlamp looks very nimble with its vertically mounted LED DRL. It is still decently placed which goes overall with the design of the bike. Stand right in front of the bike and the Dorsoduro looks very simplistic yet aggressive with very acutely shaped headlamp, elevated front mudguard and the gorgeous golden embossed suspension rods. Rest of the new body kit includes tank extensions, red hot shade used uniformly across the tubular frame, wheel rims, shock absorber spring and the cylinder assembly head along with the golden embossing for the front suspension rods. The narrow tail fearing encapsulates circular twin exhaust which is placed very close beneath the passenger handle with the all LED taillamp. This revamped look for the exhaust is curtailed in size and pointed upwards. The monoshock suspension gives that extra amount of room to squeeze rest of the assembly. Looking at the overall posture of the seat, accommodating a co-passenger would be slightly uncomfortable.

Coming to the view after sitting on the rider’s seat, the bike gets an all-new modern 4.3 inches TFT instrument cluster which it borrows from the Aprilia RSV4 and Aprilia Tuono. This light sensitive screen gives out clear and highly intelligible readings and can be wirelessly connected to our smartphone, thanks to its Bluetooth connectivity. The display helps the rider to manage and share all the trip information, with indications on consumption, routes and speeds, grip conditions and also Aprilia service centre locations. On the whole, the Dorsoduro has been built on similar grounds with Aprilia’s perfect fusion of ride and function to maximize the perfection. The new twin cylinder engine also stands out for its aggressive features that enhance its sporty stamp, one step further.

The all new Euro- 4, V-twin 4-stroke, double overhead camshaft with mixed gear/chain timing system, the 900cc engine produces a power of 95 horses and more importantly, significantly increases torque to 90Nm at 6,500 rpm. This new powerplant achieves the 90-degree angle between the two cylinders, with four valves per cylinder and liquid cooling. On the other hand, it now has a more efficient lubrication circuit and the new Marelli 7SM ECU. There are three riding modes viz. Touring, Rain and Sport with which the engine management settings can be customized according to the riding conditions. Also, the first factory bike from Aprilia to be fitted with the ‘Ride-by-wire’ technology to manage engine throttle valve electronics.

Suspension forces are worked by the 41mm inverted front fork featuring stepless rebound damping and spring preload adjustability and an adjustable Horizontal Back-link Rear Suspension that is positioned above the swingarm contributing mass centralization of the bike. The Aprilia Shiver 900 now gets three-spoked wheels in 120/70 and 180/55 rubber which helps to curtail the weight. Braking duties are handled by dual 320mm discs for the front squeezed by four-piston calipers and a single 240mm disc squeezed by a single-piston calibre for the rear with metal braided lines which maximizes braking precision. Obviously, for a bike of this potential, two-channel ABS is standard with the advanced traction control system that assures maximum safety also with riding thrill. The combination of steel trellis and aluminium plate frame provides standard-setting stiffness, ensuring it’s capability of nurturing the need of every rider. The rear shock absorber, mounted on the side, is pivoted directly to the swing arm with the cantilever layout which is also adjustable in spring preload and hydraulic rebound.
