Engine is a heart of vehicle and convert chemical energy to mechanical energy. It is mainly convert one form of energy to another form of energy. The energy developed during the combustion of fuel is transmitted to steam, which acts on the piston inside the cylinder. It has two types of operation internal combustion engines and external combustion engines (steam engines). In the maximum vehicle, I.C. engine is used like petrol or spark ignition (known as gasoline engine), diesel or Compression ignition, compressed natural gas or CNG, Liquefied petroleum gas or LPG etc. the class of service is main factor in many cases. one of the maximum use is in the field of transport. In the Petrol or Diesel engines, there are two types of stroke cycle – four Stroke cycle and two stroke cycle.

Types of engine are Inline , V-Type , Boxer or Flat , H type , Wankel  and W Type. The main parts of engines are Cylinder Block, Cylinder Head, Crankcase, Piston, Piston Ring, Piston Pin, Connecting Rod, Crankshaft, Flywheel, valve and valve mechanism, Rocker arm, Camshaft, Spark Plug and Carburettor.

There are some performances like work, power, bore, stroke, displacement, piston displacement, compression ratio, volumetric efficiency, IHP, BHP and more. Now, we discuss about one by one. Let we started from the work so it is define as when object is moved by the application of a force, work said to be done. It is measured by the product of the distance the body moves the force applied on it. Power is the rate of doing work. The rate at which the work is done is measured in terms of power. The inside diameter of the cylinder is called bore. Stroke is the distance the piston travels from the bottom dead centre (BDC) to top dead centre (TDC). Displacement is the total volume displace by all the piston of multi cylinder engine, as they move from TDC to BDC position. The piston displacement is the volume displaced by the piston as it moves forms its TDC to BDC position. the power actually developed inside the cylinder by the combustion of fuel is known as Indicated horse power (IHP). The power which the engine actually delivers to do the outside work is called brake horse power (BHP).In the last, compression ratio is the ratio of the volume of the charge in the cylinder above the piston BDC and the volume of the charge when the piston is at TDC.
